Island Hopping in Thailand
Island hopping is all fun and games until you crashed your moped the day before and can’t go into the water!
This actually happened to me. My friends and I were 4 days into a 9 day backpacking trip through Cambodia and the Thai Islands, when I lost control of my moped and crashed it with my friend on the back. Since the rest of my group were ahead, they didn’t know we crashed and kept driving on. Thankfully Thai locals are the nicest people (I seriously cannot say enough great things about them) and helped us out. We conveniently crashed down the road from a hospital and across the street from a small store with a tuk tuk driver parked in front of it. (Tuk tuks are motorized 3-wheeled rickshaws commonly used as taxis in Thailand). So this kind man drove my friend and me up the hill to the hospital where we painfully had to get our wounds cleaned with alcohol and bandaged. While our wounds hurt so badly and we were bummed not to be able to swim during our island hopping adventure, it could have been so much worse, so for that I’m grateful! But it’s definitely safe to say I don’t ever plan on riding a moped again.
Nonetheless, island hopping was still beautiful and a great time! We rented a longtail boat on Krabi Island with a private guide to take us around the islands. There were seven people in our group, so the boat size was perfect for us. The boats are very aesthetically pleasing and our guide was great, but we did hit some bad weather on the way to our first stop and the waters were rough, so definitely check the forecast before you go. But we made it safely!
The boat made a few stops at different islands where we could get off, lay by the beach, and explore the island. We sailed into this beautiful, picturesque inlet, where we cruised around and got some fun pictures on the boat. There was also a stop to get off the boat and snorkel, but unfortunately due to my injuries I was unable to do that. But other people in my group really enjoyed this part.
Overall, island hopping is a must in Thailand! It’s a great way to see a beautiful and unique part of the islands and, as with most things in Thailand, it’s very cheap!
